While some took to the streets a few hours ago to celebrate Barack Obama’s victory over John McCain, I was busy at work with my good friend and Clogger Evante Garza-Licudine coming up with a list of songs to celebrate Barack Obama’s status as the president-elect. Here is the result of our 15-minute pondering:
10. “There’s No One as Irish as Barack O’Bama” - Shay Black (cover of song by the Corrigan Brothers)
Because there’s no one as Irish as Barack Obama. Period.
9. “Mosh” - Eminem
Is Bush-bashing your thing? Then this song by Eminem will be a perfect fit for you.
8. Obama-style remix of Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” - APT
The only thing that’s keeping this from going higher is that it’s a cover. And it’s not Irish in any way remotely.
7. “Blue Train” - John Coltrane
If you didn’t feel like moving before, you might want to listen to this song to cure you of that.
6. “We Are the Champions” - Queen
Mostly because people kept breaking out into it earlier today during the random gatherings in the middle of streets. Random question: Why gather in the middle of streets?
5. “Dancing in the Streets” - Martha and the Vandellas
Only appropriate, since, er, people danced in the streets.
4. “Black President” - Nas
This one feels a bit obligatory, but it’s hard to deny that it’s an excellent song.
3. “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” - Daft Punk
Are there better words to describe Barack Obama?
2. “Beautiful Day” - U2
Tomorrow, you are going to get up (and by tomorrow, I mean today, which still hasn’t begun for us because we haven’t slept for 24 hours), the sun will be shining and an intelligent man will be the president-elect of the United States of America. Beautiful day indeed.
1. “The Times They Are-a Changin’” - Bob Dylan
Ah yes, the classic. Hear it loud and clear: The times are changing and for the better. We hope.

These are some wonderful songs. My personal favorite is “Beautiful Day” by U2.

What about “Get up, stand up?” That song is perfect for this occasion.

You’re missing Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come.” That was the first song I heard after they called the election and it gave me chills.

John Denver, “The Eagle and the Hawk”
I am the eagle, I live in high country
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky
I am the hawk and there’s blood on my feathers
But time is still turning they soon will be dry
And all of those who see me, all who believe in me
Share in the freedom I feel when I fly
Come dance with the west wind and touch on the mountain tops
Sail oer the canyons and up to the stars
And reach for the heavens and hope for the future
And all that we can be and not what we are
Jimmy Cliff, “Bongo Man”
Bongo man a come… Bongo…
Bongo man a come… Bongo…
I’m giving you the warning
A new day is dawning
So better be prepared
When bongo man gets here

Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), “Peace Train”
Now I’ve been happy lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun
Oh I’ve been smiling lately, dreaming about the world as one
And I believe it could be, some day it’s going to come
Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again
Now I’ve been smiling lately, thinking about the good things to come
And I believe it could be, something good has begun
Oh peace train sounding louder
Glide on the peace train
Come on now peace train
Yes, peace train holy roller
Everyone jump upon the peace train
Come on now peace train
Get your bags together, go bring your good friends too
Cause it’s getting nearer, it soon will be with you
Now come and join the living, it’s not so far from you
And it’s getting nearer, soon it will all be true
Oh peace train sounding louder
Glide on the peace train
Come on now peace train
Now I’ve been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is
Why must we go on hating, why can’t we live in bliss
Cause out on the edge of darkness, there rides a peace train
Oh peace train take this country, come take me home again
Oh peace train sounding louder
Glide on the peace train
Come on now peace train
Yes, peace train holy roller
Everyone jump upon the peace train
Come on peace train
Yes, it’s the peace train
