Collectively, noise rock loves Barack Obama.
Pity John McCain. Despite his daughter Meghan’s indie-ish music taste, an ongoing barrage of concerts benefiting his Democratic opponent are steadily ensuring McCain will lose the hipster vote.
Last week, Andrew Bird, Les Savy Fav and the Fiery Furnaces headlined an Obama benefit in Brooklyn; Jim James of My Morning Jacket played a $100-a-pop acoustic show in Chicago; and Vampire Weekend graced a voter registration drive organized by Students for Barack Obama at Carnegie Mellon. Jay-Z has played free shows in Detroit and Miami, and back in primary season Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, M. Ward and the Decemberists showed their support. Coming up, the Breeders and the National will perform at Vote Early, Rock Late, a free rally on Oct. 16 in Cincinnati. And the same day, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen—who recently finished his own mini-tour for Obama—headline a fundraiser at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom.
More locally, These United States and Big Light will play Barack ‘n Roll! at the Independent on Oct. 15, with proceeds benefiting the campaign’s travel to swing states. Get excited, says the website: “We can’t confirm or deny the rumors you’ve heard about the X-tra Special Headliner … but we think you’re on the right track and will be very, very happy!” (Click here to read more…)
