Midweek Bracketology: A No. 2 Seed?

See that question up there? The title of this blog post? I’m going to say no. Especially not after the No. 10 Cal women’s basketball team lost to Washington on Sunday.

But still, as the Bears prepare for the Pac-10 Tournament down in San Jose, the general feeling that the team has—or at least coach Joanne Boyle has—is that Cal can still snag a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament.

“Win the tournament and get a two-seed,” said Boyle when asked what would be the ideal situation for the Bears at this weekend’s Pac-10 tournament.

But even if Cal can win three games in a row, upset No. 7 Stanford and take the conference tournament crown, can it get a two seed? It’s a long shot at best.

If you take the top eight seeds in Charlie Creme’s most recent Bracketology on ESPN.com—UConn, Rutgers, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, LSU, Baylor and the Cardinal—all eight have one thing in common; they’ve all beaten a team in the top 10.

The Bears, on the other hand, are 0-4 against teams ranked in the top 10 this year (including two losses to Stanford). Granted, three of those four games were on the road. Granted, three of those games were close. But I don’t see how Cal can jump any of those teams for a top-two seed. I also don’t see how the tournament committee can jump the Bears over the Card even if Cal stuns Stanford in San Jose next Monday.

If the Bears had split the season series with the Cardinal, then maybe they could have been in a position to steal that No. 2 seed from Stanford.

There still is a glimmer of hope for that two seed. If any of those eight teams slip up in their conference tournaments this weekend, Cal can sneak in for that No. 2 seed. Especially since the other current projected No. 3 seeds (Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Texas A&M) have also had bad losses in the last couple of weeks to unranked opponents.

But, as of right now, it looks like the Bears are a safe bet to be a No. 3 seed when the brackets come out in two weeks.
