It was hard to believe. It was nearly impossible to fathom. Before rallying back in a win over Saint Cuthbert, the Cal reserves trailed 21-0. Yes, trailed. But as it turns out, that margin has some coincidental significance.

The Bears have won all 20 of their matches so far, and they can finish the regular season in perfect fashion — 21-0 — with a victory over British Columbia in the second leg of the World Cup Series. That match is scheduled for Wednesday, March 26, at 2:30 p.m. at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver, Canada.

And Cal definitely won’t take its chances against the Thunderbirds. The team’s best players will take the pitch. But even the First XV has struggled against its northern neighbors. The Bears won the first leg in Berkeley by a score of 35-17, but the road match hasn’t been quite as easy in the past few seasons.

UBC, on the other hand, will be well aware of the fact that Cal’s perfect regular season is on the line. The Bears take an 18-point advantage into the match, and an aggregate score determines the winner of the World Cup Series if the teams split the two matches.

The Thunderbirds have to win by 19 points or more to win the two-match exchange. But at this point, Cal isn’t just out to win the World Cup Series.

It’s out to go 21-0.
