I’m sure there was a bit of concern when Trent Johnson accepted the job down at LSU. Why, you ask? Well, because new Cal head coach Mike Montgomery did spend 18 years at Stanford, winning them conference titles and getting them to a Final Four.

So when the current Cardinal coach bolts, I’m sure there has to be some anxiety amongst the Bears community that Monty will renege on his contract with Cal.

And because Montgomery knows that the rumor mill will be working full force after the Johnson announcement, the savvy veteran felt compelled to release a statement through the Bears athletics department.

“I want to reiterate that I am the head basketball coach at the University of California and I am looking forward to the challenges of making Cal a contender in the Pac-10,” he said. “I had a great career at Stanford; I loved the place; it was great to me; but I am not a candidate for their coaching position and I’m not going to be a candidate. Trent and I are great friends and I wish him well. I am sure Stanford will find the right guy for that program.”

So for now, the conspiracy theories can be put the rest. Old Blues, current Cal students and all fans alike can rejoice—Montgomery is still theirs, even if he bleeds a little red.
