Milestone Achieved

In a world where mediocrity in sports is celebrated (see the CBI) sometimes true achievements get lost in the fray.
This was the case last Saturday when coach Peter Wright achieved his 200th career win with the Bears. When Cal defeated No. 15 Arizona State 4-3 last week (an equally impressive feat) there were no streamers or balloons, no camera crews or press conference, just another hard fought victory for a great tennis coach.
But Wright isn’t the type of coach that needs all that hoopla. In fact, Wright did not even know he was approaching the milestone until the day before.
“It’s very exciting. I didn’t know it was my 200th win until somebody told me (Friday),” Wright said.
In 14 seasons with the Bears Wright has led Cal to the NCAA Tournament 13 times. A two-time Pac-10 coach of the year (1997, 2001), Wright led the Bears to a program best 21 wins in 2005.
Although he is not in the same class as Paul Scarpa or Chuck Kriese, Wright is a coach that has shown his dedication to the Cal tennis program.
Hats’ off to you coach for an outstanding 14 years of service so far.

Coach Wright once beat Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi in a doubles match. By himself. Blindfolded. With a ping-pong paddle.
