The 2008 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships kick-off today with No. 31 Cal (12-10, 4-3 in the Pac-10) taking on No. 36 Boise State (21-11, 2-2 in the WAC). The match will be played at Marks Stadium, USC’s home court because the Trojans are the high seed of their side of the bracket.
The Bears and Broncos are both hard working teams and it will come down to whichever team makes less mistakes.

However, the more intriguing match up of the day is No. 6 USC (19-4, 6-1 in the Pac-10) against Southern University (10-11, 8-0 in the SWAC).
Granted the Jaguars are huge underdogs and I doubt they will make a Goran Ivaniševi? like run through the tournament. But don’t count them out because the are quite possibly the “G” -ist team in college tennis.
The team only has six players on its roster meaning they play in every match, both singles and doubles. Even their coach Jeff Conyers pulls double duty as he also coaches the women’s team as well.
But nothing says “G” quite like the name Kashwayne Nelson. If that weren’t enough, just take a look at the freshman’s bio. Now that’s what I call ballin’.
Seeing as Cal has lost to the Trojans twice already this season, I’ll assume they will be pulling for Southern. I know I will.
