Cal Men’s Hoops v. Jacksonville: Observations at the Half

Cal opens with a three, surprise? No good. And another long ball from Patrick Christopher, no good.
Jerome Randle gets a quick lay-up on the feed for the first points of the game, then gets a nice runner to drop in over a block to push the lead to 4-0. But the Dolphins answer with a quick three.
The Bears have already forced Jacksonville into calling two timeouts by trapping them in the corners in the first five minutes. It’s either impressive or sad, I don’t know which.
In the first few games Cal has really had a tough time getting the ball in on out of bounds plays when they are actually getting pressure. First turnover off an out of bounds of the night — D.J. Seeley threw the ball out of Jorge’s reach.
Randle fast break lay-up off the turnover makes it 17-7.
Randle threw an awful pass on a fast break and as he came over to the sideline on the timeout coach Mike Montgomery swatted him on the butt so hard, you could hear it across the court.
Next fast break, Randle dishes to Christopher, who dribbles it off his shoes and out of bounds.
A few plays later, Randle is denied entry into the post for Markhuri Sanders-Frison and turns it over again — six team turnovers in 10 and a half minutes.
The Dolphins came in having done their homework — they have been trying a high three-quarter court zone trap, which has worked against the Bears in the past. But Jacksonville is overextending itself in the back court and overcommitting on passes, allowing Cal to pass through them with ease and get into the paint with few objections. 24-9 Cal, 8:00 left.
30-15 with under five minutes to go, Montgomery is getting Bak Bak and Nikola Knezevic in the game.
Knezevic just missed an open three and Christopher went up unguarded and two-hand slammed it down with authority, 32-15.
Right now, Cal is 12 of 15 inside of three and 1-for-6 for three, with about four minutes to play.
MAX ZHANG GOT A REBOUND and the CROWD GOES WILD!!!!!
Bears 36-19 at half. This game is all but in the bag, barring disaster.
For a Bears’ team that lives and dies by the three, they are doing whatever they want except making threes. Twenty points in the paint, 12 off of fast break and six on second chance points for Cal. Whereas the Dolphins have no points on fast break and only eight in the paint.
Awful stats: 11 turnovers for the Dolphins. One-of-7 from beyond the arc for Cal.
Cal also didn’t make a field goal in the final 4:18. The Bears definitely miss Theo Robertson, but in this game it’s hard to tell how much as the team has been scoring at will.
